Florida’s trash, Washington’s treasure!

The last few days for me have been quite bittersweet as I watched former Marlins outfielder, Josh Willingham, make baseball history. How rare is it to hit two Grand Slams in one game? Josh is just the third player to do it in the National League and 13th in the Majors. Perfect games are more common!

Josh was sent packing to baseball purgatory, Washington, last season by the Marlins. He is what you’d call a “late bloomer” who also happens to be injury prone. His best year came in 2006 when he hit 26 home runs with a .277 batting average. The next two years he spent much time on the Disabled List.

What’s really sad is despite being healthy, Willingham spent most of the early season riding the bench on the worst team in baseball. In April and June he had just 35 at-bats both months. Finally able to get some playing time in July, Willingham has hit 7 home runs, driven in 23 runners, and hit .329 in over 80 at-bats.

It’s really disappointing to know the Marlins gave up on “The Hammer” but kept former super prospect, Jeremy Hermida on the team for another year. Hermida, a wasted #1 draft for Florida is in his 5th Major League season and is on pace for his third 15 HR/100+ K year.

It’s good to see one of the genuinely good guys grab some attention.

Liar, Liar, Nationals on Fire

Just a couple of days ago, Washington Nationals’ top prospect, Esmailyn Gonzalez, was 19 years of age. Today, the Nationals, who gave Esmailyn over one million dollars to sign, are finding out that he is in fact 23 and his real name is Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo. (LINK)

Last season while playing in the Gulf Coast Rookie League as a “teenager”, Esmailyn hit .343 with 2 home runs and 32 RBI. Standing under six feet tall and having almost no “pop” in his swing, you’d think Esmailyn would be stealing a base every single time he got on but his Minor League stats show just 9 stolen bases in ’08.

Having just dumped big money on a 23-year old prospect, what are the chances the Nationals hang on to Esmailyn Gonzalez Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo? It will be interesting to see how Spring Training goes for him and the Nationals.

And you thought only Topps created fake players

F**K the Florida Marlins!

My team just traded away two good, reliable players for scrubs (AGAIN).

Yup, the Marlins have sent Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham to the Washington Nationals for Emilio Bonaficio and P.J Dean. Yeah, that is all a future 30+ home run outfielder and a 200 inning work horse pitcher is worth these days. UGH!

Following the tradition set in 1998, I have begun purging my Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham baseball cards. My once awesome Josh Willingham collection has hit eBay, for anyone interested (link). All proceeds will go to purchasing vintage wax and/or to continue chasing the ’97 Bowman Master Set.

I think I’m moving back to California.

‘After the Game Report’ – 9/14/08

First of all I should add that not one single Washington Nationals players signed or posed for a photo after the game. The reason was because they were leaving town and airport screeners had set up a barricade between the fans and the team and once they were screened they were instructed to get straight on the bus.

Luckily, we arrived early and managed to snap up the team of Tommy Hutton and Rich Waltz, both who were very friendly and kind. These two guys make watching Marlins baseball fun even when we are in a losing streak or are about to be eliminated from contention.

The Washington guys seemed nice and they may have signed inside but unfortunately all the autograph hounds went home sad, which is never a bad thing when you get to know a few of them. 🙂

Florida Marlins vs. Washington Nationals

We attended the second game of this three game series and ended up having a great time despite not having our favorite seats. So, the Marlins won, Dan Uggla busted out of his slump, Mike Jacobs continued to tear through the ball, and afterwards we got to hang out with lots of players. Below are just a few of the photos we got. The Infamous Tatiana will post her blog about the night tomorrow.

Go Marlins!
