Old Habits Die Hard

When I began blogging about collecting in October of 2007, I had a simple goal. I had the crazy idea to collect every single Jose Canseco baseball card in existence. Maybe back in 1997 when I quit The Hobby it could have been somewhat realistic to accomplish but in today’s scene it’s not even close to being possible to accomplish.

So instead I changed the name of the site from ‘Canseco Completist’ to Wax Heaven. I began burning through pay checks buying up as much wax as possible until I settled down and began collecting Andrew Miller, months before he joined the Florida Marlins.

Today I feel I am as close to the pulse of The Hobby as I possibly could be and some of that excitement has been extinguished. The economy forced me out of collecting in 2008 and today it’s been over a year since I have truly felt that love I had in the beginning.

That all changed today when I made an important decision. From this point on, I am going to focus 100% of my collecting to picking up cards of only Andrew Miller & Jose Canseco. Officially, my Marlins collection is closed, even though I am a die hard fan.

I feel these two player collections is just what I need to continue to write about The Hobby for years to come. Jose Canseco brings back the nostalgia and connects me directly with the 80’s and 90’s, while Andrew Miller helps me always stay in touch with today’s new technology and card designs.

I am now in possession of a brand new scanner and will soon be adding my new Andrew Miller cards and will create a page for my 20-year old Jose Canseco collection, along with scans of some of my better cards and want lists, etc.

As always, you can expect the Wax Heaven Directory to remain open for as long as I am a sponsored site but I will ask everyone to please make a copy of the list, as I will be replacing it with the Canseco page in a few hours.

Thanks for reading and for reigniting my passion for collecting!

  1. I, too, had a epiphany today regarding collecting and blogging. I found something to be excited about again. It was a week or two of uncertainty but now I’m ready to go. Not as the Wax Wombat (because I won’t be burning through a lot of wax in my endeavor) but certainly as myself. Good luck to you, Mario.

  2. Keep hope alive, Mario. This blog is fantastic. You have made a really big impact in the sports card industry. Wax Heaven is very entertaining and informative and is a must read for “smart” collectors.
If you still want some Marlin cards I would be glad to mail you some and I’m sure others would too.
