In perhaps the biggest act of desperation or extreme foresight, the Cincinnati Reds organization gave a 16-year old Dominican player named Juan Duran a $2 million dollar signing bonus! Here is the most interesting quote from the Baseball America article;
“I’ve never seen a 16-year-old with this type of ability. I talked to some people in the Dominican Republic who crossed paths with Vladimir Guerrero at that age, guys who have been scouting in the Dominican for more than 20 years, and they said they’ve never come into contact with a bat like this.”
From the sound of it, I am going to have to stock up on 2010 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects because this guy sound like the real deal. This is no Joba Chamberlain hype! How in the hell did the Reds sign him, though? Don’t the Yankees & Red Sox usually have first dibs on these players?
I tried looking for a photo of Juan but failed on multiple levels. So to keep with the Dominican theme, here is Miss Dominican Republic 2005.
