Having pulled out a base card of Lou Gehrig from Upper Deck Masterpieces prompted me to take a deeper look into the career stats of The Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. What I found was quite surprising to me. First, he was a true power hitter, unlike his second-coming, Cal Ripken Jr. (well except in 1991), who would have easily cracked 500 and maybe even 600 home runs had he not been diagnosed with A.L.S. Much more impressive than his home run output (40+ home runs 5 times) was his amazing R.B.I season totals. In just his second full season he drove in 175! In his fifth, 174…and in his sixth, 184 R.B.I. In the end, he drove in 150+ R.B.I 7 times different times.
Here is a video I found on YouTube. If this old footage of Lou and Babe doesn’t give you chills, you might not love baseball.
