Donruss is doing some good work!

25 06 2009

With game-used relic cards being overproduced and around for over a decade, it’s no surprise many collectors have grown bored. One way card companies can revive the memorabilia card is by pairing it with a great design, rather than having the relic be the entire focus of the card.

This morning I found this Vincent Jackson autograph/game-used relic patch from 2009 Donruss Classics. Clearly, Donruss spent some time coming up with a quality design and it shows. Surprisingly, even though the card uses a sticker autograph, it manages to be incredibly subtle and well placed.

It should be noted that although Donruss flubbed their on-card autograph inserts, 2009 Donruss Classics is gearing up to be one of the better football releases of the year and that’s coming from a non-football collector and a blogger who is hated by Panini America AKA Donruss.

This is a pretty nice looking insert. I got two boxes of 2008 Donruss Classics right after it was released last year and I was very happy with them. The only problem I have with Classics is the inserts without relics are designed exactly the same, just without the jersey window, which leaves them looking like they are missing something. I also grew a little tired of having the exact same photo on every Emmitt Smith card I obtained.

Overall though, I thought it was a good product. Hopefully 2009 is even better!

I always enjoy Classics. They screwed up the School Colors autos with silver paint pens, but everything else looks good.

I have liked the base classics RCs both of the last two years, but thought the subsets looked AWFUL. This year its the other way around. Why would you edit out the field and replace it with a gross brown background? Plus, those autos arent going to do well against a dark color with black pen.

However, they seem to have ditched some of their floating swatch problems, as that card subset looks great, and so do some of the others. There are still a few that the jury is out on.

We will see soon…
