A very sad day at Wax Heaven

24 06 2009

I have lost an Andrew Miller card.

Last week, friend and fellow blogger, Eric Slette, surprised me with an Andrew Miller card I needed. It was a 2009 Upper Deck First Edition base card. It was not the fanciest or flashiest card but because I needed it, I was very happy.

Around that time, things at home began to sour. I won’t get into details but let’s just say it’s been a hectic, uncomfortable week. Naturally, I avoided working on my collection because I was just not in the mood. Sure, posts kept coming non-stop but only because writing is an obsession I’d hate to let go.

Somewhere along the way I decided to once again give away 99% of my collection. I did this back in January when I was losing space in my home and once again gave away thousands of football, baseball, basketball, and hockey cards to a local Wax Heaven reader. All I have left is Jose Canseco & Andrew Miller.

Today, a very special card arrived from Kirk, a basketball fan who wanted to trade for a Topps Signature autograph. With life settling down a bit, I decided it was time to update my Miller collection. Unfortunately, I discovered that I misplaced my Miller First Edition somewhere.

I am going to continue searching for the card but because I am so anal about organizing/cleaning, I am almost certain it is gone. An apology goes out to Eric for losing the gift he sent. In the meanwhile, enjoy this 2008 Topps Heritage Black Refractor #’d to just 59 copies.

Unless there is a Gold Refractor, I now have all of them (Base, SP, Chrome, Refractor, Black Refractor). These cards look amazing in chrome and with Refractor technology. It’s a shame that Topps left Miller out of this year’s Heritage release, along with Finest, Attax, and Bowman.

He also won’t be in Bowman Chrome, Topps Chrome, or Ticket to Stardom.

nothing worse than trying to find a misplaced card

Things happen, man. I’m sure my mom will get the urge to rip more packs again, and she’ll opt for something like First Edition. Rest assured if I acquire another one, it’s all yours.

Man up, Nancy. I’ve lost entire SETS before. I still don’t know what the hell happened to my 1995 Topps.

The good thing is now there is a confirmed Andrew Miller card out there that a) you don’t have and b) I might actually be able to find. To the card shop!

We’ve lost a card that way, to the mysterious Card Gods, never to be seen again, and it’s unsettling. But on the bright side, as dayf noted, now there’s an actual Andrew Miller card we know you don’t already have! I’m sure one way or another it will return to you. Take care, Mario.

Thanks, guys.

I just never lost a card before. EVER.

I guess we collectors experience this all the time!

Mario I find it odd you put all this time, effort, and money into collecting – only to save Canseco and Miller cards, and give away the rest.. I’ve seen you speak favorably of Longoria, so being a fan of Florida teams, why not collect established prospects like him, and Price maybe? I think it’s cool you’re not into the hobby for the “value” of your cards, but for Andew Miller to be the only current player you’re collecting, it just strikes me as weird, especially with his outlook not looking very promising..

Ricky, I collected everyone up around the time when companies began sending me free products for review. When I began giving away cards from those free boxes I lost interest in the rest of my collection and gave it away.

I appreciate all cards but due to space (and to keep from getting greedy), I just collect Miller & Canseco.

Besides, the less time I spend organizing thousands of cards, the more I can do at Wax Heaven.

Thanks for the comment!

Ever since I found your blog I read it every day.. It’s really entertaining, cuz I’m in the same boat as you – I was an avid collector from ‘88 to ‘95, and then stopped.. Your posts about cards from that time-frame I find especially funny.. I’ve been an avid internet user since the mid 90’s (basically when I stopped collecting lol), but I never knew these baseball card blogs existed.. The 1st night I found your blog, I was literally reading your old posts for probably 4 hours..

But I kinda feel bad that you put all this effort into Andrew Miller, and he seems to be panning out into mediocrity.. I check his stats every week, and I keep my fingers crossed that he’ll break out into stardom, which I’m sure you’d be thoroughly pleased with, haha.. Just keep up the good work with your blog, cuz reading it is good times..

Ricky, thanks for reading. Just a quick warning… the further back you go the more crude the posts are. It’s kind of like watching a new episode of The Simpsons and then going back to the first season. It’s rough!

I started the blog in late 2007 and there were no more than 10 of us. Now there are well over 100, which is great. There is something out there for every type of collector.

Mario-
Have been following your blog for awhile, but have never written before. Read this blog about your Andrew Miller card. I have a 2009 Upper Deck First Edition #115 Andrew Miller card. It’s yours if you want it. Just let me know how to get it to you.

Sheila, thanks very much for reading and for offering the card.

I will be attending a card show in a couple of weeks so save on the postage.

Really appreciate the offer, though. :)

i feel for you mario, i really do.
i had not the most valuable collection, but one i was fond of that had tons of cards from my childhood a bunch i had bought. my old house had the worst kind of toxic black mold in it and the cards amongst other things are ruined. im just now starting over, and having a good time but its always frustrating.
