Gordon Beckham Superfractor on eBay!

7 01 2009

The best card from ‘08 BDPP has been pulled and placed on eBay (LINK).

In 2007, Wax Heaven covered the then smoking hot Joba Chamberlain Superfractor which originally sold for $5,000 and then made a return on eBay five months later with an asking price of just under fifteen grand. Looking back at the ridiculously over-hyped Joba, his terrible 2008 season, and his recent D.U.I arrest, I hope no one was dumb enough to pay that kind of money for a baseball card not signed by Babe Ruth.

Gordon Beckham is a 22-year old shortstop and the 8th overall pick in the 2008 baseball draft. In 2008 while playing for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, Beckham smacked 28 home runs in just 71 games. He then hit another 3 home runs in 14 games in Single-A.

The Buy It Now for the Gordon Beckham 1/1 Superfractor is $3,000 dollars.

Crap, so this card isn’t in my unopened box of Bowman DPP :)

How do you figure Joba had a terrible season?

I was getting ready to purchase that card until I noted that the seller was going to tack on an additional twenty bucks for shipping.

After 2007, expectations were HUGE. He may have been unhittable but 4 wins was not what people who spent hundreds, if not thousands on his cards were hoping for.

If he can stay healthy and out of trouble, 2009 will be an interesting season for Joba.

Well people should not expect a Mariano Rivera or Nolan Ryan type of season from a kid. I understand there was a lot of hype around him, but he did what the Yankees asked him to do and didn’t do a terrible job.

Joba will be just fine in 2009, he will play the role he is asked and I am positive he will do well, if not you can yell at me later.

I am actually scared of Joba Chamberlain more than anyone else not named C.C. Sabathia in the Yankees rotation. Now that the hype has died down a little, I would not be surprised to see him have a huge season in ‘09.

Current limitations on the ability of humans to communicate do not allow me to express exactly how little I care about this card. 1/1 of the 40 different versions of this card

Too rich for my blood. This is one Sox card I will never own unless someone gifts it to me, which is as likely as pigs sprouting wings.

Damn, Mario. You’re killing me. If Gordon was in a Bulldogs uniform, I’d have to sell my car to get it. And sell my wife’s car. And steal my neighbor’s car and sell it. Then with just a small bailout from the federal government I could have that card.

Yankees rotation will go:
Sabathia
Burnett
Wang
MAYBE Pettite
Chamberlain

Joba belongs in the ‘pen. A lot of people don’t believe the strain he puts on his shoulder can last 200+ innings. They handled him like a delicate flower last year with their “joba rules” and he still landed on the DL. I think Huges will land the #4 or #5 slot.

In my opinion: Joba being lights out in the 8th inning for 50+ appearances is more valuable than 6 innings as a #5 starter and 12 starts.

Pettitte declined the Yankees offer. Replace Pettitte with Hughes (who had a terrible year last year, not Joba) and that’s your Yankee rotation.

I don’t know if it’s just the economy or what, but this seems underpriced. I usually see the Supers of the top prospects selling at $5000-7000. And the same guy buys almost all of them.

A minor league card worth that much, wow.

Was it a reader of Wax Heaven who won it??

The guy who won the card. Did you see how much he spent on cards so far this week. It has to be close too $3,000. I couldn’t spend that in a year. He has to be spending at least 50,000 a year on cards. I wish I was rich and single :)

wossamottau is the pre-eminant Bowman Super super-collector. He buys ALL of them, and I guarantee you he spends more than $50k/year on cards. The guy is borderline famous among Bowman collectors/prospectors, and on various message boards. People are actually trying to figure out who the guy is. I’ve heard all kinds of wild theories about different celebrities, including Robin Williams.

I chatted with him through email. Didn’t ask who he was, though.
He said people are always trying to get him to join forums but he doesn’t have time. He reads Wax Heaven but I don’t know to what extent.

No, all he has time to do is buy Supers. I can’t figure out though, how are people able to look at his other purchases? I’ve looked at feedback of buyers recently, and you can’t view their purchased items anymore.

It is someone who loves Rocky & Bullwinkle….take a look at the username. That is too good. I pull one good card a year and I am excited as hell…I cant imagine going to their mailbox every day.

Sure you can Charlie. All you have to do is a search on the name. It will come up and you can look at peoples comments. Then it has a the item that he won.

Two Grand on a maybe prospect, while I just got too my $100 dollar mark to get me a box of sweet spot, so that maybe I get a chance at getting a Mattingly auto.
I wish I had that kind of money.

Why not just buy 4 Mattingly autos for what you paid for the box of Sweet Spot?
