Card of the Day – Topps Moon Shots!

1 12 2008

Life truly does work in mysterious ways. Here I was, ten long years removed from the hobby of trading cards when by nothing but chance I walked by an issue of Beckett at the local bookstore. It didn’t take more than a clever advertisement on the back to pull me back in and that ad was for a 2007 Topps Co-Signers ‘Moon Shots! featuring certified autographs of two legends: Alex Rodriguez & Buzz Aldrin.

Before I knew it, I was busting wax, watching baseball again and registering a domain name for a baseball card-related blog that I planned to rule the Blogosphere someday. Boy will the sponsors hate me for this but Wax Heaven exist because of the Topps Company. Of course, the box of Co-Signers didn’t yield a damn thing (link) but boy did it feel great bustin’ wax again after a decade-long break.

This absolutely gorgeous card is on eBay right now with a Buy It Now price of $550 dollars (link). It states the odds of pulling this non-numbered dual auto was 1:1028 packs which explains why my Co-Signers autographs were duds. Either way, Topps Co-Signers will always have a special place in my heart and this card will surely rest in my collection one fine day, hopefully in 2009.

Ain’t she a beauty?

Here is another example of Topps putting a Superstar with a non-sports person. Don’t get me wrong I like the concept and the astronaut, but would it be to much to ask to put a all sports autograph lineup in a sports product.

I’m sorry, I hate this card with a passion. Nothing against A-Rod or Buzz, but this is a disgrace, particularly to Buzz. The astronaut should be on a card by himself.

It’s a weak concept to put the two together and title it “Moon Shots” on the basic premise that Buzz was the first man on the moon, and that A-rod hits long homeruns.

What’s next: pictures and cut sigs of Vlad Guerrero and Tupac with the title “he packs a gun,” referring to Vlad great arm and Tupac’s penchant for carrying weapons?

I hate that card. The design is nice, but is overshadowed by the dreaded sticker. At least use clear stickers, Topps!
