Card of the Day – ‘08 Topps Chrome

31 10 2008

I’m just going to pretend it’s 1997 and this ‘08 Topps Chrome Tim Lincecum Xfractor is a 1997 Bowman’s Best Atomic Refractor of (insert young pitcher from ‘97 here). Back in those ancient days before Superfractors and other crazy cards, this baby could have been the cornerstone of any collection. This year, Xfractors were not even serial numbered. What that means is to about 90% of collectors, it’s worthless.

Call me crazy but I still judge baseball cards by photography & design and you all know how I feel about Refractors (and their brothers & sisters). I found this today in my stars box and was somewhat surprised that I had it. I am currently in talks to get rid of my Andrew Miller/Tim Lincecum dual autograph and wanted to see what would be left of my Lincecum “stash” if I were to get rid of it.

Anyway, if you are looking for a product to buy I would highly recommend 3-4 retail blasters of ‘08 Topps Chrome (or a Hobby box) because this stuff makes the dull 2008 Topps flagship come to life like never before. Call me a “Joe Collector” but to me, Chrome technology can save any boring, dull release.

I’ve also liked Chrome the last couple of years. Better than the base set if you ask me. Maybe Topps is purposely screwing up their base set to push people towards Chrome.

They really should serial number these. I agree that these are way nicer than their base.

Awkward Moment

Are the Topps copy editors having office challenges or something? I bet you can’t write 6 lines for the Lincecum card with the ” symbol on every line!
