Cardboard Wars – Nolan Ryan

10 10 2008

In one corner you have a low-numbered autograph/game-used patch from 2008 U.D Masterpieces. While Masterpieces is not even close to being a high-end product, the Ryan patch/auto #’d to just 10 is one of the best cards in the set.

In the other corner you have a “1 of 1″, autographed card with a large chunk of a game-used jersey, brought to you by 2008 Topps Triple Threads. It is that “White Whale” that everyone speaks of but I am not entirely sure I am feeling the color of the card or that sticker autograph shinning through the scan.

So, what’s it gonna be???

Mario, I hate those damn cutouts, masterpieces all the way!

Masterpieces. Beautiful patch, on-card auto and great overall card design. While the TTT is a 1/1, it is a pretty ugly looking IMO…not that I would turn it down if someone were to give me one, but I’d rather have the Masterpieces.

I’d take the magenta printing plate “card.”

I like the UD Masterpieces: on-card auto, simple design, nice picture, great patch, and THICK! The Triple Threads has that lousy photo and a sticker auto. I don’t like all the fancy cuttings, either. UDM for me.

It doesn’t matter how rare the card is if it looks like crap (I agree with chemgod, cutouts suck). Masterpieces all the way.

Definitely Masterpieces. The on card signatures on those Masterpiece canvas cards are nice.

My vote goes to UD Masterpieces. Besides being an ‘on-card’ autograph, the patch works with the overall design of the card. You can pretty much tell by looking at Ryan’s picture where the piece of jersey came from….

Masterpieces. Not even counting the sticker auto, shouldn’t a card you’re paying over a $100 for have something better than a tiny, blurry, black-and-white photo?

Man this is really hard. I really like the Masterpieces though (like I said before on Dave’s blog, I like the font for Masterpieces), but more importantly, nice patch and nice on-card auto. Very nice color scheme as well. 1/10 vs. 1/1? Not that much of a difference when it gets down to that low of numbers.

The Masterpieces card is so much nicer. The triple threads card is fugly. Who cares about 1/1.

Masterpieces all the way. That white whale is fugly. I’d trade ‘em both for a 1968 rookie of Nolan even if there was a big crease through Jerry Koosman’s face.

Masterpieces hands down. That Topps card is just plain ugly.

The sticker and design of the Triple Threads just kills it for me. I’d love to pull that Masterpieces card and definitely think it’s the more appealing of the two.

Masterpieces, easy. I don’t even hate sticker autos, but a true piece of art in my book versus gimmick card, it’s not close.

The masterpieces is a much nicer looking card and you cant get any better then on card autos

Give me the Masterpieces card. It’s attractive, with a largish color photo and an on-card autograph.

I don’t hate sticker autographs, but when you put one on an ugly card with a tiny monochrome photo… well, it’s a good thing that it’s a 1/1 or nobody would want the poor thing. :)

I vote for the Masterpieces card – great auto, awesome colored patch, excellent design.

If the Triple Threads is a plate + auto + GU, I’m definitely going with that. It’s hard to tell from the description and photo (and I don’t really know that particular set, so forgive my ignorance). The other is obviously more visually appealing, but I’m a fan of the printing plate cards and when you tack on an auto (sticker or on-card) and then go beyond that and add GU pieces too…pretty sweet! Yeah, it’s not going to look as “pretty” because it’s monochromatic, but it’s definitely what I’d pick.

Masterpieces, no contest. The on card auto, multi color, non cutout triple threads nasty.

I’d rather have his rookie card, but if I had to pick it would be #1

Masterpieces and it’s not even close.

It’s a better looking card, by far adn it still has an auto, a patch and is #’d

Press plate. I like the whole press plate idea and even though a sticker auto you have the actual plate that made the card.

I collect Nolan Ryan, and I’d have to say Masterpieces. It looks better, and the TTT one is just ugly. Why is a high-dollar card like that not in color and sharp-looking? Is it a plate? If so, why does it have the sticker & patches? Either way, it’s ugly. And if it’s a plate, that seems like more of a gimmick to me — I’d sell it if I pulled it, so I could buy better-looking Ryan cards.

Plus I really like UD Masterpieces, just for how they look. Even the base cards look nice.

Masterpieces. The over all design of the card is 100x times better aesthetically and on top of that, the cut-outs on the Triple Thread bothers me. It just looks cheesey.

I’m surprised the most obvious opinion hasn’t been stated yet, so I will say it, and it is a very easy choice for me.

If the card is for my personal collection and enjoyment, the Masterpiece is my choice by far because of the on-card auto and it is a beautiful card with a nice photo and a patch, plus it is low numbered.

If the card is for investment, profit purposes, you have to go with the 1/1 Hall of Famer and watch the bidding wars commence.
