Peel that sticker autograph!

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

Recently, a collector purchased an Upper Deck Stan Musial “1 of 1″ from eBay. Upon further review, the collector found himself disappointed that the sticker autograph was crooked and cut badly. What this brave collector did next probably took more balls than most of us could afford: he peeled off the sticker and sent it in to Mr. Musial to sign.

Can you imagine what could have gone wrong? Not only is this a “1 of 1″, he also used an X-Acto knife to peel the old sticker off the card and word around the hobby is that Mr. Musial is gravely ill, which means that when he does pass away, there will be a huge boost in his related memorabilia, especially his autograph.

As for the sticker that he peeled off, the collector simply placed it on a base Stan Musial card. If there was an award for collector of the month, ‘Wideright‘ would be the hands down winner for October.

That’s not a terrible move. Musial signs a ton through the mail, albeit usually in the form of a post card, but this does not shock me. Sticker graphs suck, even when they are low numbered.

I bet this story is making sports collectors gasp. Good for the guy doing this. Looks better on the after shot.

Holy crap – that guy has balls the size of grapefruits! But the end result is much better!

This is what collecting is all about… this card has tons more of a personal touch from Musial, compared to a card featuring some random sticker he signed in series that was stuck on in the Upper Deck factory. That said, does it actually “increase” the value (seeing as how the hobby is big on humans not touching anything)? If I’m a real collector and went to all that trouble to do this I don’t really care.

I’m not so sure I would have had the Nads to do this with a 1/1. I have received an autograph from Mr. Musial through the mail, so I do know he signs. Good luck to that guy.

Wow, what a gamble! Great result though. Stan the Man was one of my first TTM autograph successes and I treasure his autograph!

I guess if it gets to the point where the companies can’t get it right, it’s up to the collectors!

Bravo!
