Introducing ‘Cardboard Wars’

9 10 2008

This is a new feature to Wax Heaven which will be posted every day at Midnight. The concept is simple. I will post two cards from the same year and of the same player. They will go up against each other, you choose which one you’d rather pull from a pack and why.

Today we feature Cy Young contender and pitcher I’d be collecting if Andrew Miller wasn’t on the Marlins, Tim “The Freak” Lincecum. You have to choose between a low-end product with an autograph or a high-end product with an extremely low serial number and an impressive patch.

1.‘08 U.D Heroes – Tim Lincecum autograph & game-used jersey

2. ‘08 U.D Premier – Tim Lincecum low-numbered game-used patch

What’s it gonna be???

So where are we supposed to vote? In comments? If so, I vote for the UD Heroes card, simply because of the aesthetic factor. Yup I would buy a card just because it looks pretty.

That and I’d rather pull the UD Heroes because I”m thinking of collecting the base set.

I will go with the UD Heroes….agreeing with William. Pleasing to the eye. The patch is nice but the card is blah.

I’d rather pull the Heroes card too. It looks nicer (you get an action photo instead of just a tiny head shot) and you get an autograph.

WOWOWOW, I like the start to this segment of the website. I’m going to have to go for the UD Premier Patches GU Patch. The reason is that I really don’t like the design of the Baseball Heroes card itself. I don’t like the color scheme and I don’t like the circle background. In addition, the patch is off-centered and the autograph is a sticker autograph. Premier Patches is beautiful with a nice centered GU patch as well as stamped logos and such. In fact, I have both of these cards, but not these same parallels. I have only the GU of baseball heroes out of 125 and /75 for the Premier Patches. I am now up to around 33 Lincecum cards! It’s going to stay that way for a while. Due to the really bad economy and finances, I have really debated hard about selling off the collection as it would net me around $500 at least, but ugh. I have held off so far.

Ooh. I like this new feature already. Except in rare cases, for me an autographed card is always going to win out, even though all I can make out is the T. and the L. … I’d pick an autographed ‘89 Fleer over a low serial number.

Baseball Heroes. In almost every case, I’d much rather have an auto than a low numbered patch of the same player. In this case it’s even better because it’s a GU/Auto with a decent photo. This isn’t a set that I’m all that interested in, but between those two cards, definitely the Baseball Heroes GU/Auto.

Heroes. I love Patches and low serial #’s and all that stuff, but nothing beats having an autograph. The fact that the jersey is on there is just a bonus.

I’ll take the auto, please. That’s not a good looking patch card.

I like the patch, but I will go with the auto jersey.

I’d take the autographed Heroes card.

I’d go with the Autographed Heroes card as well.

Give me the patch plus it’s 10/10 card….

Count me in for an autograph over a relic anytime. The jersey on the Heroes card is so boring that I missed it the first time. Is Lincecum’s auto getting sloppy, or what?!!?!!

The Heroes design is nice and clean, but I’ve seen it so many times it doesn’t appeal to me so much any more. The killer is that it’s a plain white swatch. The patch card isn’t the most thrilling design, but the swatches have colors and stitches, so you know they’re at least from something Giants….

My votes goes to the patch card. The design screams Giants!!

The auto would win if it was on card. I’d have to say the patch card with low serial # would catch my eye.

I’d take the Upper Deck Premier, for the only reason that I would sell it on ebay and buy a box of Upper Deck Heroes.

Upper Deck Heroes look much better, and remond me a lot of the early Baseball Heroes inserts from the early 90s. I bought a couple packs, and I must say, many of the players in the set would hardly qualify as “heroes” in my judgement.

Auto over relics always, plus I like the Baseball Heroes set.

Isn’t that autograph numbered to 5? That makes the Heroes card even more attractive to me.

upper deck heros, patches are to common.

Always the auto over patch, unless it’s a significant patch like a flag.

Also, vertical cards are easier to display than horizontal

Heroes and it’s not close for me. Love autos, enjoy the Heroes design and dislike Premier.

Wow, so it’s Heroes with the easy victory. :)

Tonight’s will be a little tougher to choose.

I dunno, I’m usually a much bigger fan of autos than jersey cut-ups, but I think the Premier looks a bit nicer. I just don’t think the Heroes looks that great, plus the auto is on a sticker.

Gotta go with the patch. I quite like UD Heroes, but that card doesn’t do it for me. A green card of a Giants player… just, no. I don’t mind the sticker, but his autograph looks like ass. And that plain white swatch won’t do. The color scheme of the patch card goes much better with the Giants team colors. I don’t think the design is too bad either. I’d don’t see anything wrong with it at least. And finally, it’s just a really nice patch. Even with a neutral color scheme (like the grey/silver version) or one that fits the Giants colors better on the Heroes card, the patch card is still the winner here.

Man you have to go with the jersey auto it looks so superior to the other jersey autos i give it a 9.5 out of 10!

The voting may be over…but I would vote for #2 (Premier). The patch is beautiful and the card is #d/10. I also just think that the Heroes set is poorly designed and not appealing to the eye, and Premier is IMO.
But, I’d love to have either card in my collection!

Though I prefer to focus on cards with autos, in this case I would take the Premier Patch. You have to admit there is something special about pulling a SICK patch card. Not just a little two-color one that is barely noticeable, but a nice SICK one!! Plus, the x/10 makes it very appealing, so in this case, it is an easy choice for me.
