The lesser of two evils

5 09 2008

With my beloved Marlins eight games out of first place and no realistic chance at the playoffs I have been forced to pick the lesser of two evils in the National League East. Today, the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets square off for a three-game series which will should make for some great baseball drama.

If I had to choose between a team with stars like David Wright and Jose Reyes or a team with gritty underdogs like Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, my heart goes to the Phillies. Not only did they bring us ‘Rocky’ and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but they created a monster named Ryan Howard, who next to Alex Rodriguez…is the most dominant slugger in the game.

So now it’s time to for the Phillies to shine. Howard, I expect three home runs and seven RBI from you in this series. Jaime, you lovable old grump! I want you to pitch your heart out and show that Andrew Miller-lookalike-Cole Hamels how it’s done. And finally, Chase…keep being you. You hate New York for booing you and I don’t blame you.

Guys, let’s win this one for the blogger!

You’re testing my loyalty to the website Mario :-)

Mets take 2 out of 3 this weekend. I like how you didn’t mention J-Roll, that little punk.

I wouldn’t exactly consider Ryan Howard or Chase Utley underdogs. Those guys are stars. Plus I believe A-Rod has an equal named Albert Pujols. As far as the outcome, I’m indifferent, just looking forward to some awesome baseball.

How are the Phils underdogs when they won it last year? Even if the Mets sweep, they’ll be up 6 games with 19 to play… still not out of reach for Phils when you consider they were 7 games with 17 to play last year.

Next to Arod, Ryan Howard is the most dominant slugger? I’d take Albert Pujols or Josh Hamilton this year… slightly few HRS, but their BAs more than make up for it.

I don’t think the Phils are underdogs but Ryan Howard is considering he was a late bloomer and early in the season people actually accused him of being “done”.

I wouldn’t call guys like Howard and Utley underdogs. Howard won the MVP a few years back, right? And it is obvious that Utley is the best 2B in the MLB right now. And although Howard probably is the 2nd best slugger in the MLB, it doesn’t make up for the fact that he is a .230 hitter with nearly 200 Ks. With that being said….

LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!! We got a 3 game lead, let’s go ahead and finish Philly off for good this time!

Best post ever Mario. Utley certainly has that underdog characteristic. He’s very small but he has that gritty determination that we Philadelphians love. Victorino’s another guy like that.

Go Phils!

Regardless, Philadelphia gave us the Philly cheese steak. I’m in. :)

Thanks for the Phillies plug! I haven’t quite figured out if any of the weekend games are going to be on tv here in Houston yet but I hope so. Of course the Astros (my other team) have been hot as heck recently (just swept a 4-game series in Chicago) but I think they are too far back even for the wild card.

Being that I was born and worked in the city of brotherly love (Philadelphia)for almost twenty years. Thank You Mario for picking us (Fight’in Phillies) to win 2 of 3 games. We have the N.Y. Mets number! They the Mets always choke when facing us the Phillies! Plus the fact Saturday’s game will be a rain out anyway and there is no way the N.Y. Mets could win a double header!
Go Phillies!!!!!
