Former Orioles infielder dead at 52

5 09 2008

Although I did not know much about Todd Cruz the baseball player, it still strikes me that anyone could die so young. Cruz, part of the 1983 World Champion Baltimore Orioles was on the field in Camdem Yards less than two months ago while being honored for his play that championship year.

On September 2nd, Todd Cruz was found dead in his apartment complex pool. No word yet on the cause of death but there is an ongoing investigation. On the field, despite being labeled “light-hitting”, Cruz blasted a respectable 16 home runs and drove in 57 RBI in less than 500 at-bats. Sure, that’s one 1998 Sammy Sosa month but in 1982, the year he put up those numbers Sammy Sosa was just a 34 year-old playing stick ball in the Dominican Republic. ;)

I was able to find a recent photo of Cruz and well, he didn’t look so healthy. I’d hate to speculate on the cause of death so I will update this post when the news breaks on what killed this former ball player and 52 years young man.

Why do you say he doesn’t look so healthy? I don’t think he looks too bad.

Also, I wonder who that young blond boy is holding his hand?

For a moment, I thought that was a picture of Jose Mesa.

He does not look good in this picture! If you knew him throughout his life you would understand. That chick attached to his hand was definitely not his style. Something definitely wrong there.
