A tribute to 2007 Topps ‘52 Rookie Cup

I have no problem admitting when I am wrong. Being a “newbie” to card collecting when I started Wax Heaven, I have made more than one error in judgment since then. For example, when I busted ‘07 Goudey I complained for hours after pulling “yet another Josh Hamilton relic”. By that time I already had one autograph and was none too pleased about a bat card. Of course, I could have never imagined the comeback he would make in less than a year’s time and now both those cards are long gone.

The same can be said about my initial reaction to 2007 Topps ‘52 Rookie Cup Edition. The price at the store seemed too perfect which meant I was all over it like Amy Winehouse on crack but by the time I opened the box and found card after card of baseball unknowns I was ultimately let down. My initial review called the set “A poor man’s Bowman” but come to think of it, it’s much better than your typical Bowman set.

It took me a long time to really appreciate this set but now that the smoke has long settled, I absolutely love Topps ‘52! The checklist was beyond impressive (if you like big sets), there was plenty of flash but not overkill (Chrome & Refractors!), and the autographs were “on-card” and not some ugly sticker. It seems all so perfect today but trust me, I was not a happy camper when I did my video box break WAY back what seems like an eternity, 7 months ago. (you can view the video here).

So here you go, Topps. My bad. Your set was superior over most of the competition last year, even if your redemption issues screwed me over big time. Now, when can Wax Heaven expect ‘08 Topps ‘52 to hit the shelves? I am dying for my box (or two!).
