HONUS & the shiller

5 08 2008

As many of you know, a 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card sold for an astonishing $1.62 million dollars at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago last week. As it turns out, the company that headed the auction, Mastro Auctions was served a subpoena by the F.B.I for something we collectors have to deal with on a daily basis through eBay.

Authorities are said to be investigating possible “shill bidding” in which bogus bids are submitted to drive up the prices of collectibles.

If it is proven that the Wagner auction had phony bids I think there is a big lawsuit on the way from a very angry man in Arkansas. It could also be another big, black eye on the hobby of collecting at a time when we definitely cannot afford to have one.

Most people that here that someone bought the card for $1.62 MILLION say the guy is a Moron. When he sells it for $2.5 Million He will be a genius! I love the site!

The Feds were also talking to PSA about card doctoring. I wonder if the two are tied to this Wagner card? I think someone in Arkansas is pissed off.

That article does not directly name the Wagner as a card under suspicion. If there were some schill bidding going on, that’d be a foolish item to chose considering there are so many eyes scrutinizing that particular sale.
