Check out what this 2005 Sweet Spot Classic Ty Cobb sold for!
To be honest, when I first came back into the hobby I was amazed by the whole idea of cutting up jerseys and bats and putting them into baseball cards. By 2008, I had pulled well over 50 of them, kept about 10 and came to a conclusion that having a tiny, worn piece of a player’s pants or jersey was not that great after all.
For me, the idea of game-used jerseys finally showed its true colors when the only purpose they served me was to be used for “trade bait”. So much for my assumption. This 2005 “short print” G/U just sold for well over Beckett’s book value at $610.00 (!) dollars despite having a tiny piece of jersey with no swatch or even a stripe.
I could say G/U is a washed-up gimmick all I want but the 41 bids and multiple bidders on this item alone just proved me wrong. Of course, if cheap “hits” is your thing, check out Mike’s blog on how to get your money’s worth on jerseys and autographs each and every time.

I can’t believe that it went that high! Nice card but really……
That set usually sells high, you should see the jumbos.
Oh well, another piece of history destroyed for profit.
How much would it cost to buy up all the cards that were made from this particular pair of Cobb’s pants? At $610 a 0.25 square inch, probably a ton more than it cost Upper Deck to buy the pants, cut them up and insert them between pieces of cardboard.
It’s a nice card but it’s this kind of pricing which gives Upper Deck an excuse to charge so much for their 5-card “super-premium” boxes.
They would cut up the Shroud of Turin into squares to make a buck…
Thanks for the shout out Mario!
well folks you may cry as I did But I am happy now. I am one trying to finish this materials set. and I cried 2 days ago when I BIN on ebay for the Ty cobb Sp just like the one above I paid $550. Now I only need the white whale Willie Stargell.. However when I checked Becketts OPG this morning for the cards in my collection to my surprise This TY COBB card took a $450 jump from $75 -$150 to $300-$600.. This set is worth more money even with out the stargell…….
The guy who won it claims to have bought two others for $800 and $1000. I suspect that this is a mix of truth and lies in order to drive the price of this card up – this could easily be the case. Think about it!
