Andrew’s “hairy” situation

9 07 2008

Before we get started, I think I should explain the title of the post. Andrew Miller, Wax Heaven’s Golden Boy has grown what some might call “facial hair”. It came out of nowhere and shocked the hell out of me when I saw it. What also shocked me last night was Miller’s performance. It was terrible. He looked nervous, frustrated, angry, and pitched one of the worst games of his short career with Florida.

Worst of all, Josh Johnson will be joining the Marlins roster after a long recovery from “Tommy John” surgery which means the Fish will have to send someone down to the Minors to make space for a new starting pitcher. In Andrew’s last four starts, he has three loses. He also  has just one win in his last nine starts. Obviously, I am worried about his spot on the Marlins roster, especially with Anibal Sanchez on a fast road to recovery and Mark Hendrickson and Ryan Tucker itching to get their starting jobs back while they sit and wait in the bullpen.

By the end of the day we will know who goes down to Triple-A. Needless to say, I am terrified that it might be Andrew. Would they demote Miller for his recent lousy starts? Absolutely. Should they? Personally, it would be a huge error and this has nothing to do with the fact that he’s my favorite. Despite his struggles throughout the season, Miller is second on the team in strikeouts behind the suddenly hot Ricky Nolasco. He would at the best make an excellent fifth starter until he gets proper command on the mound and at the worst would make a great set-up/relief pitcher.

I tried to find a picture of Miller’s new ’stache but failed so instead I created an artists’ rendition of Andrew Miller’s facial hair. I think he added a couple of extra hairs but you get the point.
