Another lazy effort from Topps

30 06 2008

I don’t care how many times it’s been explained to me, if I pay for a baseball card I want to physically add it to my collection, not keep it in some vault in New York. That being said, I am not a fan of e-Topps. Still, in the past they have put out some awfully nice cards and this one is no exception.

So yes, even though the photo is clearly from an old photo shoot and is on the wrong team, I want it. Couldn’t the guys at e-Topps just re-use the photo they put on Maybin’s 2008 Topps Co-Signers card instead of using a photo from 2006?

If you are an e-Topps zombie odds are you’ve already made your decision and are pulling out your Visa to buy this card up but for the same amount this card is being sold for ($40), you could buy a Maybin autograph from the team he currently plays on, the Florida Marlins.

Here you can find his autograph from 2007 Bowman Sterling for $34.99 or ‘Best Offer and for probably under $2.00 you can find his 2008 Topps Co-Signers with the proper team. Who knows? Maybe in a month’s time a company will come out with a Cameron Maybin autograph with the Florida Marlins as his team that is not a dual auto but as for 2008 e-Topps, you guys have failed.

You have to love the great ‘85 topps design though! Great looking card!

The E-Topps card is actually a 2007 issued card. They then have the cards signed by the player at a later point in time. That would explain the Tigers uniform.

Thanks CalicoKid, that makes a lot more sense.

Mario. While I am willing to admit that Topps is lazy when it comes to photography, the problem is that this is not a 2008 etopps card. Whenever etopps offers an autograph, the card is usually at least 1 year old, because they have to wait for the athlete to get the on-card autos.

I have actually purchased quite a few etopps cards this year. Some for my collection, and some to turn a quick eBay profit to spend on more Dawson cards. If you buy the right cards, you can turn them around in 24 hours for a decent profit.

The cards you actually want for your collection don’t have to sit in the warehouse. You can get them sent to you in a tamper-proof case, serial #’d with a Topps hologram, and printed with foil refractor technology.

They really are pretty nice cards if you pick and choose which ones to get. The autographs in my opnion, are a rip-off.

Mario buddy, a lazy effort from my favorite blogger! I expect better. In all seriousness though, this is a ripoff. Go with the other autos. To get the card in your portfolio and then be lucky enough to purchase the auto at $40, it costs way too much.

I actually didn’t even look at the price. Most of the autos they offer are between $75 and $100.

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Yeah, I guess this post is Mario Being Mario.

Keep reading, though. :)

off the subject, but speaking of Cameron Maybin.

My dad was going to see the Carolina Mudcats play back in the beginning of June.
Actually, he was throwing out the first pitch. He was a good athlete at UNC, pro baseball and football player, yadda yadda.
I asked my dad if he would try to get something signed by Maybin.
My dad gave the gameball he threw out to the person that works for the Mudcats that arranged for him to be there that night to get Cameron to sign.
The rep. from the team emailed my dad and told him that Maybin may not sign the ball, b/c “it’s in his contract that he can only sign certain things.”

Is that where we are now with “prospects” in sports?
A kid who is 20 yrs old and in Double A baseball is too good to sign a baseball for a guy who is in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame?!

Damn, great story man. You know what’s funny? Around that time Maybin was doing terrible and striking out like 2-3 times per game. Wow.

I heard Jeter cannot sign ANYTHING cause he has a contract with a company. I don’t know if that’s true but damn…

yeah
My dad said he wasn’t impressed with Maybin, esp. his effort.
He didn’t run out ground balls, etc.
He thought the $2.4 mil bonus he got when he signed kind of went to his head.

How do they fleece people into paying so much for the e-Topps autographs? I just don’t get it. I can get a Maybin auto on eBay for 2 bucks.

I’ve been upsetting e-Topps collectors since December of 2007!
